EAST FISHKILL—The East Fishkill Democratic Committee will hold its second annual Citizen of the Year Award on Sunday, Sept. 13, 2009, with a brunch from 11:30 to 2:30 at Le Chambord.
Our honoree this year is Susan D. Blodgett. The award, which is named for the late Dominick Cannizzaro, honors a resident of East Fishkill who has contributed to the community.
Ms. Blodgett was honored by the Dutchess County Youth Bureau as its Teacher of the Year award before her retirement from John Jay High School in 2001. At John Jay, she ran the in school suspension program for 23 years. Her retirement has allowed her the time to become more involved in the community.
She currently serves on the Architectural Review Board for the Town of East Fishkill, as vice president of the East Fishkill Community Library Board of Trustees, secretary of the Dutchess County Mental Hygiene Board, chairman of the Children and Youth Subcommittee of the Dutchess County Mental Hygiene Board, task force member of the Building Bridges: Schools and Organizations Working Together, vestry member of the Church of the Resurrection, and co-chairman of the Special Events Committee of the Center for Lifetime Learning at Marist College.
Ms. Blodgett is also coordinator of Democratic Inspectors for the Town of East Fishkill. As such, she works on Election Day from 5:30 a.m. to well after the polls close at 9.
The Dominick Cannizzaro Citizen of the Year Award ceremony takes place at Le Chambord, Route 52, Hopewell Junction. The cost is $45 per person. The proceeds benefit The Friends of the East Fishkill Community Library, the host committee and the Dominick Cannizzaro Foundation.
Mr. Cannizzaro served three terms as Supervisor of the Town of East Fishkill, from 1986 to 1991. He was a past president and founding father of the Joe DiMaggio Sons of Italy Lodge #2248 in Hopewell Junction; a past president of the Lion’s Club; a member of the Greater Southern Dutchess Chamber of Commerce; and a co-founder of the Colette Cannizzaro Memorial Golf Tournament for Cooley’s Anemia Research. He was the owner and operator of Hopewell Auto Parts on Route 376 for many years.
